Introduction of the new AISC Seismic Specification and Manual
The 2005 AISC Seismic Provisions for Structural Steel Buildings, is a substantial update to the previous releases of the provisions in 1997 and 2002. This presentation highlights these changes while providing an overview of the Provisions, from the new combined ASD and LRFD format to member and system requirements. The discussion will concentrate on Part I of the document. The AISC Seismic Design Manual, 1st edition is the first publication which illustrates the application of the Seismic Provisions. The Manual provides supplemental information and tools to help make the Provisions easier to use. The organization, tables, and examples from the Manual will be previewed along with the new AISC document, Prequalified Connections for Special and Intermediate Steel Moment Frames for Seismic Applications.
Introduction to the new AISC 2005 Specification for Structural Steel Buildings and the 13th edition Steel Construction Manual
In 2005, AISC released a new Specification for Structural Steel Buildings, ANSI/AISC 360-05 and the 13th Edition Manual of Steel Construction. The new specification unifies the ASD and LRFD design approaches into one standard. This presentation discusses the goals of the new specification, the new terminology used, many of the specific provisions. The discussion of the 13th Edition Manual will address the general layout, look of the tables, and resources that will be available to help engineers learn and use the new information in these document
Steel Solution Center FAQs
Averaging over 200 inquiries each week, the Steel Solution Center can readily identify trends in the inquiries received. The Steel Solution Center works closely with the Engineering and Research Department and the Committe on Techincal Assistance to develop new Frequently Asked Questions to address these topics. These questions are published on the website each quarter, providing a valuable resource to the design and construction industry. This one-hour seminar focuses on the most common asked questions from this resources, including such topics as the new 2005 Specification, the new 2005 Seismic Provisions, and the high-strength bolting.
Steel Tools from the AISC Solutions Center
AISC created Steel Tools for use in making economical decisions during structural design in today's construction market. Steel Tools are a series of electronic tools that can help engineers save time, especially in the early stages of a project by automating calucations. Design alternatives can be quickly compared and the most economical systems can be determined in minutes! These tools are free and available for download from AISC's website www.aisc.org/steeltools.
Specifying Camber: Rules of Thumb for Designers
Specifying beam camber can provide substantial depth and weight savings to a floor system and an entire building. Though there are times when specifying camber can be advantageous, there are situations in which it is also impractical. The suggestions given in this presentation are based on the summarized results of AISC's Steel Solutions Center's research and will help you achieve the greatest benefit when specifying camber.
Harnessing the Power of AISC Design Guides
Structural Engineers are called upon to tackle tough analytical problems every day and AISC has many resources available to make that job a little bit easier. This one hour presentation will familiarize you with the great technical resources available in the AISC Design Guide Series. We will review the Design Guide Series paying particular attention to the Design Guides that cover floor vibrations (DG#11), serviceability (DG#3), retrofit and rehabilitation of existing structures (DG#15), and design of industrial buildings (DG#7). The session will also include a general review of all AISC Design Guides, including the newest ones on column base plates, steel plate shear walls, welding, and fire.
Prequalified Seismic Moment Connections
This lecture addresses the two seismic moment connections as defined in the new AISC Standard, Prequalified Connections for Special and Intermediate Steel Moment Frames for Sesimic Applications. The presentation also discusses other moment connections expected to be prequalified in the near future.
2008 T.R. Higgins Award Lecture by Walterio Lopez and Rafael Sabelli
