NEW! Intelligent Design! Low-Rise and Mid-Rise Buildings Seminar

8.0PDHs / 0.8CEUs

AISC Seminars have always been practical, but this new 2008 AISC Seminar raises the bar.  It focuses on rational and efficient building-design methodologies that you can incorporate into your practice as soon as you get back to the office!  Attend this lecture and you will learn how to work smarter instead of harder, which will increase your ability to make better decisions for you clients, create more economical designs and increase revenue for your firm.  Lecture modules cover the philosophy of design, design considerations relative to loads, selection of framing systems and their components, preliminary design techniques and much, much more.  For example, did you know that there is now a way to design without ever having to calculate a K-factor again?  You will learn how to use the Direct Analysis Method to make design and analysis easier.  Don't miss this unique opportunity to learn from two of the pre-eminent designers of our time - James M. Fisher and Michael A. West - at this great AISC Seminar!

Handouts:  The presentation contains practical application examples and you will leave the seminar with a handout that not only includes slides in the presentation, but also contains extensive lecture notes with an in-depth discussion of each slide.  This is a handout that you will refer to over and over again!

Authors:

James M. Fisher, PhD., P.E.
Vice President, Computerized Structural Design, S.C., Milwaukee

Jim Fisher received a B.S. degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Wisconsin in 1962 and after serving two years as a Lieutenant in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, he continued his formal education.  In 1965 he received his M.S. and PhD in Structural Engineering from the University of Illinois. Prior to joining Computerized Design, Dr. Fisher was an assistant professor of Structural Engineering at the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee.  Dr. Fisher's structural expertise has resulted in authoring and co-authoring sixteen books, numerous technical publications and several AISC seminars and short courses.  He has lectured for AISC throughout the U.S. and Mexico.

Dr. Fisher currently serves as the Chairman of the AISC Specification Committee for the Design, Fabrication, and Erection of Structural Steel Buildings, and is a member of ASCE 7, and the AIST Subcommittee on Design and Construction of Mill Buildings.

In 1984, Dr. Fisher received the T.R. Higgins Lectureship Award presented by AISC, and in 2000 he received AISC's Lifetime Achievement Award.  Both awards recognized his exceptional contribution to the steel construction industry.  He also received AISC's highest award, the J. Lloyd Kimbrough Award in 2006.

Michael A. West, P.E., AIA
Vice President, Computerized Structural Design, S.C., Milwaukee

Mike West received his B.A. from the University of Illinois in 1971 and an MBA from the University of Wisconsin - Madison in 1977.  During his career at Computerized Structural Design, which began in 1978, he has been responsible for both the architectural and structural design of numerous industrial, commerical, and institutional projects.  He has also been responsible for the structural design of several low-rise and mid-rise buildings, including office building, hotels, warehouses, and institutional buildings.

Mr. West has lectured extensively on the topics of serviceablity, bracing, design loads and the basic principles of structural engineering and in 2006/2007 presented several AISC seminars on the new 2005 Specification and Manual. Mr. West is a member of AISC's Committee on Manuals and Textbooks, AISC's Committee on the Code of Standard Practice and AISC's Certification Committee.  He chairs the AISC-ACI Task Group on Tolerances and on Tolerances for the Construction of Steel and Concrete Structures and the AISC-ACI Task Group Coordination.
