ACSA/AISC Student Design Competition

AISC is pleased to announce the sixth annual student design competition for the 2005-2006 academic year. Sponsored by The Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture (ACSA) and the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC), the program is intended to challenge students, working individually or in teams, to explore a variety of issues related to the use of steel in design and construction.

Winners of the 2004-2005 ACSA/AISC Student Design Competition

For the first time the 2004-05 ACSA/AISC Student Design Competition offered architecture students the opportunity to compete in two separate categories. Category I challenged architecture students to design a Student Union Building for their campus or a neighboring campus.  Category II was an open competition with restrictions.  Open to students in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, the winners were chosen from among 400 submissions from over 40 universities.  First, second, and third prizes along with three honorable mentions were awarded in each category.

This year’s design jury consisted of the following:

Category I – Student Union BuildingJori Erdman, professor at Clemson University, School of Architecture; Mitchell Squire, assistant professor at Iowa State University, Department of Architecture; and Christopher Hoyt, architect at Shalom Baranes Associates, a Washington, DC, area architecture firm.

Category II – OpenHarry Kaufman, professor at Southern Polytechnic State University, School of Architecture; Renee Chow, associate professor at University of California at Berkeley; and Don M. Jones, AIA, architect at the Philadelphia office of EwingCole.

A total of $14,000 in cash prizes will be awarded to winning students and their faculty sponsors.

First Prize - Eduardo Soto, University of Maryland, School of Architecture, Student Union Building, Faculty Sponsor: Amy Gardner and Mark McInturff

Second Prize - Richard Y C Lam, Harvard University, Graduate School of Design, Wellesley University Student Center, Faculty Sponsor: Nader Tehrani

Third Prize - Colleen Gove, University of Maryland, School of Architecture, A Place Preserved, A Place of Interaction, A Place of Connection, A Place of Gathering, Faculty Sponsor: Amy Gardner and Mark McInturff

Honorable Mentions
Daekwon Park, University of Illinios at Urbana-Champaign
Todd Costain, University of Minnesota
Robert Tait, University of Tennessee.

Third Prize - Ha Thanh Pham, New Jersey Institute of Technology, School of Architecture, Your Radio Station, Faculty Sponsor: Pablo Jendretzki
