This lecture will cover the basics of the design of concentrically braced steel frames following U.S. and Canadian Design Codes.  A step-by-step outline of the seismic design process, as well as the relevant capacity design principles will be presented.  The focus will first be set on traditional construction techniques and connection details that are currently used in practice or are being proposed as improvements to current practice.  Recent developments in the design of braced frames will also be presented including cast steel connectors and a new middle cast steel link element designed to enhance ductility and energy absorbtion.

The seminar is presented by Constantin Christopoulos and Jefferey Packer, University of Toronto.

This seminar was developed as part of the 2008 North American Steel Construction Conference. Upon completion of the seminar, the attendee will be able to purchase an online quiz based on information given in the seminar. When she/he passes the quiz with a score of 70% or higher, the attendee will be able to print a CEU/PDH certificate for 1.5 contact hours.
