Listen to the Steel: Duane Miller on Welding
Everything you need to know about your welding applications is discussed in this one day seminar: Listen to the Steel. Each module gives concise resolution to steel welding issues and together they represent the full welding spectrum. All modules will be presented in each city, however, the modules relevant to each city's location will be covered more extensively.
| |
Details of Welded Connections: All of those little details that come back to haunt you: fillet weld terminations, lap joint details, minimum sized welds, maximum sized welds, transverse and longitudinal fillet welds, backing and more. |
| |
Special Welding Applications: Practical, straightforward solutions to challenging situations including welding on existing structures, extending structures, extending anchor bolts, welding AESS, "jumbo sections", and others. |
| |
Seismic Welding: An overview of the new AWS D1.8 Seismic Welding Supplement, geared toward the engineer with specific focus on what should be included in Contract Documents and what the Engineer should expect from contractors doing work to this Standard. |
| |
Welding Heavy Sections and Highly Restrained Members: This section will examine the requirements for successful welding under such circumstances, including discussion on the topics of material properties, weld access holes, preheat, welding sequences, and post-heat. Practical suggestion for reducing shrinkage stresses will be presented. |
| |
Listen to the Steel: A serious talk with a humorous title, this module examines fatigue failures from a variety of industries, citing the principle for design that was violated, as well as the corrective actions that were taken to overcome the problem. |
| |
Cost Reduction Ideas: Design-related and detail-oriented alternative examples are discussed that can reduce cost of welding by 25% or more. Groove weld details, sizing of welds, selection of weld types and more. |
Handouts: Attendees will receive a copy of the author's course notes and a copy of AISC Design Guide 21 - Welded Connections - A Primer for Engineers.
Author & Speaker : Duane K. Miller, Sc.D., P.E., Manager, Engineering Services, The Lincoln Electric Company, Cleveland, OH.

Duane K. Miller is a recognized authority on the design and performance of welded connections and is in demand as a speaker on the subject all over the world. He is the co-presenter of the Lincoln Electric's Blodgett Design Seminar Series, and a frequent speaker at seminars sponsored by professional groups such as the American Welding Society (AWS) and the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC). Dr. Miller publishes frequently in the industry press and on three occasions has been awarded the coveted Silver Quill Award of the AWS for the excellence of his published work. He has authored and co-authored chapters of many texts, including the Highway Structures Design Handbook, Mark's Handbook of Engineering, and AISC's Design Guide 21: Welded Connections - A Primer for Engineers. In 2001, he received the American Institute of Steel Construction's T.R. Higgins Lectureship Award, which annually recognizes an outstanding lecturer and author whose technical papers are considered to be a major contribution to engineering literature. In 2005, he received AISC's Lifetime Achievement Award. He has appeared as a subject expert on Modern Marvels and on The History Channel. Dr. Miller earned his B.S. degree in Welding Engineering from Le Tourneau University in Longview, TX, an M.S. in Materials Engineering from the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee, and was awarded an honoray Doctor of Science degree from Le Tourneau University in 1997. An AWS member since he was 19, he currently serves as Chair of the AWS D1 Structural Welding Code Committee and is a member of the Technical Activities Committee. He formerly chaired the Seismic Welding Subcommittee and the AASHTO-AWS Bridge Welding Subcommittee. Dr. Miller is a member of the AISC Specification Committee, a Professional Engineer, and is both a Certified Welding Inspector and a Certified Welder. In 1994, Dr. Miller was selected to chair the AWS's Presidential Task Group on Northridge earthquake issues. He also served on the Project Oversight Committee of SAC, a consortium sponsored by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to provide understanding of connection behavior in the wake of Northridge. |
