Erika Winters Downey, SE, LEED BD+C, is the Great Plains Regional Engineer for the American Institute of Steel Construction. She represents the Institute in the states of Iowa, Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, and portions of Texas, Colorado, and Wyoming. Working with project decision makers, she can connect members of the design team with the resources of the steel production and fabrication community to help assess the viability of a structural steel option on upcoming projects. She is also an educational resource to the design community on technical and economic aspects of building with structural steel. Prior to becoming a Regional Engineer for AISC she worked as an advisor in AISC’s Steel Solutions Center for 2 years. She developed conceptual solutions for many steel structures including parking garages, multi-story residential, office, industrial, educational and healthcare buildings. Before joining AISC she worked for Structural Engineering firms in Chicago and Kansas City. She has experience with all phases of design, from design development through construction administration. Domestic and International highlights include the Takeda Pharmaceuticals Headquarters in Deerfield, Illinois and Caja Madrid (formerly Torre Repsol) in Madrid, Spain. In addition she has experience in wind design of curtain wall panels for Frank Gehry’s Experience Music Project and Millennium Park Project. She attended the University of Kansas and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Architectural Engineering and Master of Science in Civil Engineering. She and her husband, Chris, live in the Kansas City suburb of Lenexa, Kansas. Erika’s favorite pastimes are playing volleyball and cheering on her Kansas Jayhawks! |
