Historic Shape Producers

From the 1880s onward, producers of iron and steel sought to promote their products through catalogs of their shapes. Over time, the publications evolved to include design information, which varied among producers--and city building codes. This lack of standardization is what led to the creation of AISC in the 1920s and the subsequent development of the AISC Specification for Structural Steel Buildings and the AISC Steel Construction Manual.

Scanned copies of AISC's collection of shape producer catalogs are linked below. The lock icon Members Only indicates these PDFs are available for free to AISC members as part of our ePubs collection. Simply click title to open the PDF in a new window. File sizes are large. Due to their age, these books were hand-scanned, resulting in a variable appearance.

Most, if not all, historic shape information is included in the historic AISC shapes database. Another excellent reference is AISC Design Guide 15, Rehabilitation and Retrofit. You may also want to check out our collection of historic AISC standards.
