Part 1: The history, performance, sustainability and applications for stainless steel as a structural material will be introduced, with references to specific projects. The families of stainless steel used for structural sections and available product forms will be reviewed. The mechanical and physical properties will be compared with other metals. Guidance on material selection for a range of environments (atmospheric, salt water, soil, swimming pools, industrial) and design factors that influence durability will be presented. The appropriate ASTM specifications and AWS codes will be reviewed.
Part 2: This webinar will explain why stainless steel needs its own design rules and how its unique properties impact both design and fabrication. The scope of the design rules given in the Design Guide will be explained, followed by an explanation of how the design rules were derived. The design rules will be presented, starting with design requirements, and moving on to tension members, members in compression, members in flexure and shear and members subject to combined forces. Aspects of designing bolted and welded connections will also be covered. Design rules for structural fire resistance will be described. The rules will be put into context by comparing them with the existing rules in AISC 360-10 for carbon steel.
