We're celebrating SteelDay! BUT, did you know we also are celebrating the fact that this fall marks 30 years since the creation and installation of the original Steel Sculpture? This year, our student SteelDay contest turns its focus to the over 170+ steel sculptures that can be found on university campuses across the U.S. and worldwide. Students are encouraged to enter our SteelDay student photo contest by submitting a unique photo of their school's AISC Steel Sculpture. Students simply need to take an interesting photo of their school's AISC Steel Sculpture and send it to [email protected]. All eligible photos will be posted to AISC's Facebook page for online voting during the week of September 26. And, students, be sure to share your photo with your Facebook friends during the vote—the students who have submitted the top five photos with the most likes will win a prize!
All entries must include: Student's full name, university name, and a unique photo of their university's AISC Steel Sculpture. Eligibility to win prizes is limited to students attending U.S. universities.
- Photo submission window: August 8 - September 16.
- Online voting on Facebook: September 26 - September 30.
- Winners announcement: Monday, October 3, 2016.
About the Steel Sculpture
Entrant's Grant of RIghts to Submission
The original steel sculpture was erected on the University of Florida's campus in Gainesville on October 29, 1986. Created by Duane Ellifritt, Ph.D., P.E., Professor Emeritus of Civil Engineering at UF, the structure was envisioned to be a full-size 3D model that would provide engineering students with up-close, hands-on exposure to structural steel members and connections.
A few years after the first sculpture was installed, AISC requested and received permission to use and promote a scaled-down version of the sculpture as a teaching aid. Modified versions of the original steel sculpture now exist on more than 170 campuses worldwide. A list of known locations can be viewed at aisc.org/steelsculptures.
By participating in the SteelDay Student Photo contest, each entrant irrevocably grants AISC a non-exclusive, unlimited, worldwide, perpetual, royalty free, transferable license and right to use and authorize the use of the entrant's submission and any other material or information in connection with the Contest for purposes of advertising, trade and other commercial purposes. AISC will not share private information.
Students who have submitted the top five photos with the most likes at the close of the vote on AISC's Facebook page will win a Bose® SoundLink® Bluetooth Speaker (retail value $129.99). Students may submit more than one photo but may only win one prize.
