SteelDay Student Contest - Sculpture

Contest Description
We're celebrating SteelDay!  BUT, did you know we also are celebrating the fact that this fall marks 30 years since the creation and installation of the original Steel Sculpture?  This year, our student SteelDay contest turns its focus to the over 170+ steel sculptures that can be found on university campuses across the U.S. and worldwide.  Students are encouraged to enter our SteelDay student photo contest by submitting a unique photo of their school's AISC Steel Sculpture.  Students simply need to take an interesting photo of their school's AISC Steel Sculpture and send it to [email protected].  All eligible photos will be posted to AISC's Facebook page for online voting during the week of September 26.  And, students, be sure to share your photo with your Facebook friends during the vote—the students who have submitted the top five photos with the most likes will win a prize!

Submission Requirements
All entries must include: Student's full name, university name, and a unique photo of their university's AISC Steel Sculpture.  Eligibility to win prizes is limited to students attending U.S. universities.

About the Steel Sculpture

The original steel sculpture was erected on the University of Florida's campus in Gainesville on October 29, 1986. Created by Duane Ellifritt, Ph.D., P.E., Professor Emeritus of Civil Engineering at UF, the structure was envisioned to be a full-size 3D model that would provide engineering students with up-close, hands-on exposure to structural steel members and connections.

A few years after the first sculpture was installed, AISC requested and received permission to use and promote a scaled-down version of the sculpture as a teaching aid. Modified versions of the original steel sculpture now exist on more than 170 campuses worldwide. A list of known locations can be viewed at
