    NSBA Recognizes 19 Outstanding Bridges

    All of the 2020 Prize Bridge Award winners have made an enormous impact on the lives of the people they serve--some in particularly dramatic ways. The Pfeiffer Canyon Bridge reconnected a California community after a landslide damaged a concrete bridge beyond repair (so much so that groceries and fuel had to be brought in by helicopter!). The new bridge opened for traffic across a narrow, mountainous space only eight months after the existing bridge was closed.

    Dowswell will present "Gusset Plates: The Evolution of Simplified Design Models" as a keynote speaker during NASCC: The Steel Conference, which will take place April 22-24 in Atlanta.     New AISC Standard Now Available for Public Review

    The American Institute of Steel Construction invites comments on the current draft of a new standard that will apply to the retrofit of structural steel buildings subjected to seismic loading. The new standard, Seismic Provisions for Evaluation and Retrofit of Existing Structural Steel Buildings (AISC 342), is intended to be used in conjunction with ASCE/SEI 41, as a replacement to Chapter 9 of that document. Public comments will be accepted through May 20, 2019.

    NSBA Welcomes Brandon Chavel as Director of Market Development

    Brandon Chavel, one of the nation's leading bridge designers, has joined the National Steel Bridge Alliance (NSBA), a division of the American Institute of Steel Construction, as its new Director of Market Development. Chavel will spearhead the expansion of AISC's Steel Solutions Center to provide technical assistance, innovative solutions, and tools to make structural steel bridge design even easier. Chavel will manage a team that will develop conceptual solutions for bridges across the country, and will also direct an initiative to foster public-private partnership work with general contractors.

    The American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC) has honored more than 60 structural steel fabrication and erection facilities with AISC Safety Awards for their excellent safety performance records in 2018. Awards are given in the categories of "Fabricator" and "Erector" and include the Safety Award of Honor -- AISC's top safety award -- presented for a perfect safety record of no disabling injuries, as well as the Safety Certificate of Merit and the Safety Certificate of Commendation.

    Engineers now have more options for seismic design. AISC’s recently released Supplement No. 1 (ANSI/AISC 358s1-18) to the 2016 version of the AISC standard, Prequalified Connections for Special and Intermediate Steel Moment Frames for Seismic Applications (ANSI/AISC 358-16), now allows designers to specify slotted web moment connections. In addition, the supplement includes a field bolted option for the popular SidePlate moment connection.

    The 2018 version of the AISC standard, Specification for Safety-Related Steel Structures for Nuclear Facilities (ANSI/AISC N690-18), is now available for free download. The updated standard includes changes that are compatible with the baseline document, the 2016 AISC Specification for Structural Steel Buildings (ANSI/AISC 360-16), and it replaces ANSI/AISC N690-12 including Supplement No. 1 (ANSI/AISC N690s1-15).

    U.S. Imposes Tariffs on Fabricated Structural Steel Imports from China

    The Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR) has released its list of approximately $16 billion worth of imports from China that will be subject to a 25% tariff as part of the U.S. response to China’s unfair trade practices related to the forced transfer of American technology and intellectual property. The list contains 279 of the original 284 tariff lines proposed, including those AISC requested for inclusion in its two separate testimonies in front of the USTR Section 301 Committee. This is the first time that tariffs have been extended beyond mill products to include fabricated structural steel, and will go into effect on August 23, 2018.

    Industry Testifies to Include Fabricated Structural Steel in Section 301 Tariffs

    Last week, David Zalesne, chairman of AISC and president of Owen Steel Company, Columbia, S.C. (an AISC member and certified fabricator), testified on behalf of the fabricated structural steel industry in front of the U.S. Trade Representative Section 301 Committee in Washington, D.C., in support of applying 25% duties under Section 301 of the Trade Act to the products described by six Harmonized Tariff Schedule (HTS) Codes relating to fabricated structural steel imported from China.

    Fabricated Structural Steel Considered for Section 301 Tariff List

    The Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR) has released a list of products imported from China that will be subject to additional tariffs as part of the U.S. response to China’s unfair trade practices related to the forced transfer of American technology and intellectual property. Fabricated structural steel was added for consideration to the Section 301 tariff list due in part to AISC’s advocacy and testimony at last month’s USTR Section 301 public hearing in Washington, D.C.

    Lafayette College Wins NSSBC for First Time Ever

    The student steel bridge team from Lafayette College, Easton, Penn., was crowned champions in the 2018 ASCE/AISC National Student Steel Bridge Competition (NSSBC), hosted by the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, May 25-26. This is the first time the college has captured the national title in the competition’s 27-year history. California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, received second place overall, and École de technologie supérieure, who won first place overall the past two years, took home third.

The guide has been reorganized and updated to include a new chapter of comprehensive design examples on flexural members, columns and connections.     University faculty are invited to apply for the 2019 AISC Milek Fellowship, a four-year fellowship given to a promising university faculty member to conduct structural steel research.
