AISC Seeks New Ideas For Residential Construction
$10,000 first prize offered for innovative ideas

Cash prizes totaling $15,000 will be awarded to the top two proposals in the American Institute of Steel Construction’s inaugural Multi-Story Residential Design Competition that challenges entrants to develop new and innovative solutions for structural steel and floor framing systems in multi-story residential buildings.
Designers of multi-story residential buildings, one of the fastest growing segments in the construction industry, have turned to structural steel systems including Girder-Slab, Staggered Truss, Stub Girder and Precast Plank construction to minimize floor-to-floor heights. Multi-story residential buildings include apartments, condos, hotels, dorms and senior housing. This competition challenges designers to create new systems with even more benefit to aid the design of structural steel multi-story residential buildings.
AISC’s Multi-Story Residential Design Competition proposals do not require the use of structural steel floor systems but the designs must be compatible with structural steel framing. All entries must be received by AISC no later than January 31, 2004 and winners will be announced at the north American Steel Construction Conference in Long Beach, CA, on April 24-27.
All proposals will be reviewed and judged by a panel of designers and contractors. Entrants must grant AISC permission to develop and use the submitted innovation. Submissions must be in English and less than 25 pages in length, submitted in both print and electronic form (i.e. Microsoft Word). The proposal must contain enough information to clearly describe the innovation and demonstrate that it has significant potential for use in residential construction. Entries should be mailed to:

Submissions must include:
- A clear description of the floor system.
- A clear description of the innovation proposed and a sound technical explanation of the principles that support the innovation’s potential for success.
- An analysis of the economic factors surrounding the innovation and that support the innovation’s potential attractiveness to the steel construction industry.
- The name of the innovator.
- The innovator’s address, telephone number and e-mail address.
- A signed statement that the proposal is offered for the development and use and that, to the knowledge of the presenter, it is not patented or otherwise protected.
- Design and construction costs - is the system less expensive than existing systems?
- Span length - a minimum 40' span capability under residential floor loads is required.
- Assembly depth - will the system help minimize floor-to-floor heights?
- Constructability - can the system be easily fabricated and erected?
- Serviceability - vibration and live load deflections are critical concerns.
- Durability - will the system hold up well under conditions typically present in residential construction?
- Load transfers - can the system adequately transfer diaphragm loads?
- Sound transmission
- Fire resistance - what type of fire protection is needed?
- Compatibility with steel frame construction - does the floor framing system work well with a steel frame?
- Required finishing system - does the system require a concrete topping or suspended ceiling?
- Sensitivity to field modifications - can the system readily accommodate revisions and unplanned construction conditions?
