Reports to: Director of the AISC Steel Solutions Center

The American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC) invites applications for a Senior Engineer in the Engineering and Research Department. The successful candidate will provide technical support through the AISC Steel Solutions Center, focusing on our growing engineering and research programs and initiatives related to fire engineering for steel structures.

AISC, headquartered in Chicago, is a non-partisan, not-for- profit technical institute and trade association established in 1921 to serve the structural steel design community and construction industry in the United States. AISC's mission is to make structural steel the material of choice by being the leader in structural-steel-related technical and market-building activities, including specification and code development, research, education, technical assistance, quality certification, standardization, market development, and advocacy. AISC has a long tradition of service to the steel construction industry, providing timely and reliable information.

The essential duties and responsibilities of the Senior Engineer - Fire Engineering are:

• Support the Engineering & Research Department in the development and administration of initiatives related to fire engineering, including:
  • Assisting in managing AISC's research project portfolio, including contract administration and project management, for fire-related projects.
  • Evaluating technical needs and developing frameworks for new projects in the broad area of fire engineering for steel structures.
  • Supporting AISC members in the area of fire engineering for steel structures, including developing technical content and answering questions.
  • Supporting activities in the development of codes and standards, both internal and external to AISC, related to fire engineering.
  • Disseminating information resulting from research projects to the stakeholders of the steel construction community.
  • Support Technology Integration initiatives within the Engineering and Research areas.
• Provide technical support to the AISC Steel Solutions Center (SSC) as needed, including:
  • Provide correct, prompt answers to technical inquiries in the area of fire engineering and other areas within the staff member’s knowledge and expertise. The director of the SSC will decide the level of the technical inquiry assigned to be answered and reviewed.
  • Collaborate with the AISC Innovation Hub and its staff, bringing novel solutions to fire-related problems.
• Assist the Vice President of Engineering and Research in special projects as assigned.

Other duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

• Serve as secretary for AISC committees as assigned,
• Participate as a member of the Engineering Journal review board.
• Participate in the activities at NASCC: The Steel Conference as required.
• Write at least one peer-reviewed paper and/or one article for AISC's Modern Steel Construction magazine annually.
• Attend AISC department meetings and retreats.
• Present lectures as appropriate as a representative of AISC.
• Carry out special projects as assigned.

The following attributes and credentials are required of the candidate:

• Bachelor’s degree in fire protection engineering, civil engineering, architectural engineering, structural engineering, or a closely related field.
• Professional licensure (Professional Engineer, PE; Structural Engineer, SE, etc.)
• A knowledge of steel building design and construction
• An ability to work with and manage volunteers and consultants.
• Willing to participate in departmental and organizational activities, such as education initiatives, professional development activities, conferences, etc.
• The candidate must be a United States citizen or authorized to work in the United States.
• Ability to travel up to 25% of the time.

In addition, the following attributes and credentials will set a candidate apart from others:

• A master’s or doctoral degree in fire protection engineering, civil engineering, architectural engineering, structural engineering, or a closely related field.
• Additional experience in fire engineering, such as relevant fire codes and standards, fire dynamics, fire modeling, building codes related to fire safety, fire suppression systems, fire resistance ratings, and material fire properties, is preferred.
• Additional certifications appropriate to this position (e.g., Structural Engineer (SE), Certified Fire Protection Specialist (CFPS), Certified Fire and Explosion Investigator (CFEI), Certified Vehicle Fire Investigator (CVFI), etc.) are a plus, as are certifications appropriate to the steel construction industry (e.g., weld inspector certification, LEED certification, etc.)
• Membership and leadership in relevant professional organizations, such as the Structural Engineers’ Association of Illinois or the American Society of Civil Engineers.

Salary: $130,000 - $135,000 annually
