2nd Edition Seismic Design Manual [N6A]

This 90-minute session will present an overview of the 2nd edition AISC Seismic Design Manual. The AISC Seismic Design Manual, available to the public by early 2013, contains nine parts, mostly consisting of design examples that illustrate the ductile design and analysis of steel and composite buildings for seismic events. A tenth part contains the legal standards for seismic steel design: the AISC Seismic Provisions for Structural Steel Buildings and the AISC Prequalified Connections for Special and Intermediate Steel Moment Frames for Seismic Applications. The session will describe the tables and design examples in the Seismic Design Manual, including the design of members and connections for braced frames, moment frames, collectors, and composite systems. It will discuss certain elements of these design examples in more detail, such as the panel zone detailing requirements in special moment frames, gusset design, and the different ways to account for brace buckling and frame action in special concentrically braced frames. The session will also highlight the ways in which these examples meet the requirements of the AISC Seismic Provisions, thereby helping engineers understand this legal standard. This session during the 2013 NASCC will be very timely, and of interest to design professionals, educators and researchers, code developers, and students.
