A Closer Look at Steel Plate Shear Walls

This article presents information on steel plate shear walls. A shear wall made from steel plate may seem like a new idea. However, the concept of the steel plate shear wall has been around for decades and was used in a significant number of buildings, even before the existence of design provisions specifically addressing this structural system. Now addressed in AISC's Seismic Provisions and covered in AISC's Design Guide 20: Steel Plate Shear Walls, special plate shear walls are a viable option for many high-seismic designs.
