AISC Research: The Chevron Effect: Shear and Bending Moment Demands for Beams in Concentrically Braced Frames [E28a]
The beam region between braces in concentrically braced frames is subject to high shears as the various brace forces are distributed at the joint. These suggested shears can be especially high when there are unbalanced vertical forces in the braces. Drs Fortney and Richards look at these connections with traditional statics models and with finite element methods and discuss how to design connections with these stresses and the conditons in which the stresses can exceed expectations.- Date: 3/22/2017 - 3/24/2017
