BIM Model--Approved! [T9]

Fewer than 1% of fabricators and detailers have used a 3D structural steel model for approval purposes, even though 80% use 3D/BIM models. That's according to the respondents of a 2011 AISC survey. As a result we have set out to change this statistic.

Building Information Modeling (BIM) is becoming common place within the structural steel industry. 3D models are being used for design, early clash detection, estimating, drawing production, material control and tracking and electronic downloads to fabrication machinery. It only makes sense that the General Contractor, Architect, Engineer and Fabricator use the 3D model to review and approve the structural steel. This presentation will explore the tools currently available, the advantages and disadvantages, some common obstacles and misperceptions. Using real examples and hard evidence from actual projects, audience members will be left in no doubt that Approval by Model is a reality that they will need to embrace sooner or later.
