Blueprint for Success: Mining Architecture's Approach to EDI for Inspiration in Engineering and Steel Professions [A1]
Structural steel, engineering, and architecture are innately intertwined industries. Each profession consists of skillful, creative practitioners who are passionate about their contributions to the built environment. We naturally understand that uniting our individual skill sets with those of our adjacent industries is vital for success, yet the value of embracing diversity within our own field is often overlooked. By making a conscious effort to be aware of and to accept the diverse realities of the individuals we build for, we gain valuable perspectives into our problem-solving approaches, opening the door to increased innovation. The programs, research, and conversations around EDI in the architecture world is currently outpacing the work done in engineering and steel professions. By evaluating the most effective programming generated by architecture professional organizations, universities, and companies, we have an opportunity to more effectively implement successful EDI programs in the steel professions and engineering industry and to build a more equitable and innovative AEC community.
