Characteristics of Robust Structures [E22]

Robustness of structures is a little-understood and widely debated topic that has been the subject of numerous studies worldwide. A robust structure is one that exhibits the ability to redistribute load and remain stable after localized but severe damage to key elements. (Robustness can also be described as the ability to resist disproportionate or progressive collapse.) The first part of this presentation covers the characteristics of robust structures while the second gives practical guidance on design for robustness and collapse resistance.
