Collaboration Saves Resources at the Ohio State University Medical Center [N77]

When the James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center opens in 2014, the 20-story, 1.1-million-sq.-ft facility will be one of the 15 tallest hospitals in the U.S. Among the most challenging aspects of the project was adapting the structural frame and foundations to accommodate an additional second floor radiation oncology treatment center requiring heavy, vibrationsensitive equipment and shielding. Steel for the project had already been ordered and partially fabricated when the new floor was added. Attendees will learn how the successful hyper-collaboration between the structural engineer and the fabricator allowed nearly 90% of the original steel structure to still be used and how the addition only added six months for both redesign and re-fabrication.
