Design, Detailing, and Efficiencies in Steel Design From a Fabricator's Perspective [E27]

This presentation will explore design, detailing, and efficiencies in steel design from a fabricator's perspective. We will review the requirements for cost-effective detailing, effective connection design, and how a lack of these requirements and changes impacts production and overall project costs. The goal of this presentation is to review these requirements from a fabricator's perspective so we can improve the overall process by which various segments of a project team communicate. We will discuss the following examples:

  • Lack of basic information, which affects material procurement and schedule
  • Presentation of simple beam loads, which affects connections and costs
  • Indicating transfer forces, which affects cost and man hours
  • Requiring full capacity connection
  • And more!

We will also discuss the importance of collaboration with professionals from both the design and construction sides of projects. Finally, we will review various examples of details that improve communication.
