Industrial/Non-building Structures Design Challenges [N26A]

This session presents three different industrial/nonbuilding structural design challenges: design of horizontal bracing, design of a lattice steel solar tower incorporating a tuned mass damper, and the non-linear behavior and design of shear lugs. This presentation will provide practical design information on horizontal bracing and their connections, commonly used in industrial structures where diaphragms are not present to distribute horizontal forces. The presentation will then highlight the challenges of designing the largest concentrated solar generating facility in the world when it is completed. Lastly, the session will discuss the results of research on the behavior of shear lugs, providing information about the controlling limit states and the ductility characteristics of them.
