Practical Use of the Direct Analysis Method [N21A]

The direct analysis method for steel frame structures was introduced in the 2005 AISC Specification and continues in the 2010 Specification. The primary benefit of this approach to analysis and design is the elimination of K-factors in the design phase. This session will introduce the direct analysis method and discuss the factors that must be included in all designs and the unique features of this approach. The method will be illustrated through simplified examples that permit comparison with the effective length method. The session will conclude with an example of the method applied to a real building, showing how to apply typical software and how to develop hand calculations to permit checking of some of the results of that software.
