Part 1 – Overview & Gravity Loading (5/14/2020)

Part 1 will touch on common problems confronted by stairway designers and focus on structural issues related to gravity loads. Topics will include:

    • Common issues related to design and construction of steel-framed stairways
    • Stair types, members, and components
    • Code requirements specific to stairways for gravity loading, as defined by the IBC and OSHA
    • Steel stairway member and connection design
    • Design examples

Part 2 – Seismic Loads & Delegated Design (5/21/2020)

In Part 2, the focus will shift to issues related to lateral loads, especially seismic demands. Topics will include:

    • Code requirements specific to stairways for seismic loading, as per the IBC and ASCE 7
    • Delegated design considerations
    • Coordination between project team members: stair designer and architect, engineer of record, detailer, fabricator, and erector
    • Design examples
