Fundamentals of Welding and Bolting

presented by:
Duane Miller and Curt Decker of Lincoln Electric
Chad Larson of LeJeune Bolt Company

Back to school time! If you need a refresher on the fundamentals of welding and bolting, AISC’s fall Night School course is for you. Starting September 27, the course will present a thorough review of the fundamentals of welded connections and bolted connections. Duane Miller and Curt Decker of Lincoln Electric will lead the first four sessions, which will focus on welding. They’ll walk you through topics like applicable welding codes, arc welding processes, joints, weld types, and principles of welded connection design that lead to better welded connections. The welding sessions will also review special applications like welding AESS and existing structures, and conclude with a session on problems and fixes.

Four-session package available for upcoming bolting sessions!
We'll then shift gears to the fundamentals of bolting. Chad Larson of LeJeune Bolt Company will tackle basic concepts, specifications, and bolted connections, along with installation methods, inspection, and best practices for proper fastener tension. The last session rounds out the course with discussions on supplementary requirements for fasteners, rotation capacity testing, and a review of new standards.

Sessions

September 27, 2021 -- 7:00-8:30 p.m. EDT

This session will introduce the welding sessions before addressing welded connection basics, which begins with a review of applicable welding codes. The session will then review arc welding processes including advantages and limitations, and also review welding thermal cutting processes. The session will then review joint and weld types.

October 4, 2021 -- 7:00-8:30 p.m. EDT

Following the right principles can lead to better welded connections and better projects. In this session, 14 principles of welded connection design will be presented. The principles are discussed and then illustrated with examples of connections that comply and do not comply with the concepts.

October 18, 2021 -- 7:00-8:30 p.m. EDT

This session covers atypical welding applications for buildings.  The live webinar presents practical, straightforward solutions to challenging situations including: welding of steel headed stud anchors, welding on coated steels, welding AESS, welding on existing structures, welding heavy sections, welding under high restraint, field welding, heat shrinking, cold temperature applications and more.

Welding Pt. 4: Problems and Fixes

October 25, 2021 -- 7:00-8:30 p.m. EDT

This session covers problems associated with structural steel construction and provides solutions to many issues.  Topics such as repairs to base metal, out-of-tolerance weld joints, repairs to welds, welding on anchor rods including extending rods that are too short, repairing lamellar tears and more are addressed in this session. In all cases, the session provides practical solutions to these common problems.

November 2, 2021 -- 7:00-8:30 p.m. EST

This session will introduce the general terms and functional elements of structural fasteners.  This session is intended to equip participants with a conversational understanding of physical and mechanical properties, including basic fastener behavior and terms.

November 9, 2021 -- 7:00-8:30 p.m. EST

This session will review responsible organizations and related key specifications. Review of common connection types for bolted steel connections.  An explanation will be given regarding how connection design relates to bolt selection and use.  Design limit states such as shear and bearing and slip critical connections will be discussed.  Practical suggestions to minimize the potential for bolt related problems will be presented.

November 30, 2021 -- 7:00-8:30 p.m. EST

This session will focus on structural fastener installation methods.  Recommendations on the best practices to achieve proper fastener tension will be given.  The differences between just tight and tightened right, including inspection requirements for installation methods.  The procedure for arbitration will be discussed for pretensioned and slip-critical joints.

December 7, 2021 -- 7:00-8:30 p.m. EST

This session will provide an understanding of specific supplementary requirements for fasteners.  Rotational capacity testing will be explained.  A review of new standards and key changes to existing standards will be presented.
