Can you piece together the clues and run the calculations before the deadline?
Preliminary renovation plans are underway for Resilience Station in Steelville, Illinois! The historic train station will be transformed into a public museum, with the upper level of the iconic clock tower becoming an observation deck. As the design team’s structural engineer, you must evaluate the existing clock tower framing for the proposed observation deck. Unfortunately, the original building drawings were lost in a fire, so you’ll have to base your assessment on other information, including field notes and historic references.
You’ll have to act fast: The mayor of Steelville wants to publicly announce the renovation plans on SteelDay, Friday, October 21!
Your Mission
Determine whether an existing beam in the clock tower can support the proposed renovation loads.
You’ll only need three things: an AISC student membership, a computer, and a calculator. We’ll supply the rest, including resources for evaluating existing structures, background information about Resilience Station, and field notes from your colleague.
How to Participate
First, you'll need to be a student member to participate. Find your AISC student member information to log into www.aisc.org (hint: Did you buy an AISC Steel Construction Manual through your professor? You may already be a member!) If you aren’t already a member, join now! It’s easy--you just need to complete the application and provide a copy of your student ID as well as a copy of your current class schedule. If you have any questions about your membership, contact membership@aisc.org.
Then, log into the AISC site (upper right hand corner of this page) and register for the game using this link:

The game will open on Monday, October 10, 2022 and entries are due on SteelDay, Friday, October 21, 2022 by 11:59 p.m. Central.
Special note: Are you a professor who is curious about what this may entail for your students? You may sign up with your AISC educator member account to get full access to the contents.
