Steel Shots: U.S. Open Roof Rising

AISC’s Mid-Atlantic Regional Engineer, Jacinda Collins, P.E., LEED Green Assoc., recently visited the U.S. Tennis Association Arthur Ashe Stadium in Flushing Meadows–Corona Park, Queens, N.Y., for a tour of the new retractable steel roof being constructed over the stadium. The initial roof frame is expected to be finished by June (in time for this year’s U.S. Open August 31 - September 13). The remaining construction work will resume in the fall, with the retractable portion of the roof to be installed later this year. Twenty-five steel columns will support the roof of the stadium – each 150 ft high, all in blue to match the color of the U.S. Open courts. Several facilities are contributing the fabricated structural steel for the project, including AISC-Member/AISC-Certified fabricators Canam Steel Corporation, PKM Steel Service, Inc., and ADF International, Inc. Derr Steel Erection Co. (an AISC Member/AISC Advanced Certified Steel Erector) is the steel erector for the project. Completion for the project is slated for the 2016 U.S. Open.
