Steel Shots: Pre-SteelDay Site Tour

Chicago’s 150 N. Riverside office tower project, currently under construction in the city’s West Loop, is the first in the U.S. to use A913 70-ksi hot rolled steel. It’s also using A913 65-ksi W36x925 hot-rolled wide-flange sections, which are the largest rolled sections currently available in the world. (Photo: AISC)

A 54-story, 1.2 million-sq.-ft office tower is rising at 150 N. Riverside in Chicago’s West Loop. The project is the first in the U.S. to be built using A913 70-ksi hot rolled structural steel — and AISC is offering a free site tour on Friday, August 28.

Attendees will discover the unique challenges faced by the project team and learn how the use of high-strength A913 gr 70 steel has met those challenges. A solution to the project’s narrow footprint, a four-story composite truss and double W36x925 A913 gr 65 columns were able to deliver an innovative structural system, architectural flexibility, low cost and a quick construction schedule.

The event will begin at 11:30 a.m. at the Holiday Plaza River North, where guests will receive free lunch and a brief presentation by leaders from the project team of Magnusson Klemencic Associates, Zalk Josephs Fabricators LLC (an AISC Member and AISC Certified fabricator) and Chicago Steel Construction LLC. Attendees will then walk to the 150 N. Riverside site for the tour, which will begin at 12:30 p.m.

For more on the project, see our former Steel Shots post "Mega Steel."

The project site tour and presentation is a sneak peek at the exciting type of SteelDay events scheduled to take place around the country on September 25. SteelDay is an annual event sponsored by AISC and hosted by its members and partners celebrating structural steel. Visit www.steelday.org to learn more about hosting or attending an event.
