Upcoming Webinar to Cover Design of Bolted Girder Field Splices

The 8th Edition AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications contains several changes that impact steel connection design. NSBA is hosting a webinar on March 14 that will introduce the new simplified design procedure for bolted splices and present updates on changes to the shear and slip capacity of bolted connections.

The behavior of a connection designed using the new method will be compared to the older method in a finite element analysis. Design examples for a composite plate girder and a composite trapezoidal box girder will be presented, and a brief introduction to a spreadsheet solution available on the NSBA website will also be included.

Highlights of the new method include:

  • Ensurance that the splice can develop the yield strength of the flange and shear capacity of the web and also has the strength to resist the applied design forces

  • Moment capacity is checked using a lower bound equilibrium solution, based on the flange yield capacity

This hour-long webinar will begin at 12:30 p.m. (CT). Attendees are eligible to receive 1 PDH upon completion of the webinar. For more information and to register, click here.
