AISC Supports “Buy American” and “Hire American”

AISC has released a position paper affirming its support of President Donald Trump’s call for expanded rules mandating “Buy American” and “Hire American” on infrastructure projects.

Currently, the U.S. steel industry directly employs 180,000 American workers. The position paper states, “The American steel supply chain is in jeopardy, however. Since 2015, more than 15,800 direct jobs in the iron and steel industry have been lost.” The paper outlines AISC’s belief that Buy America requirements should apply to all public infrastructure projects, regardless of how specific project financing may be arranged. “AISC does not take a position on whether or what types of non-traditional infrastructure options should ultimately be adopted, but urges that whatever policy is adopted explicitly require that Buy America requirements be incorporated in the enabling legislation.”
