Nucor Corporation and Yamato Kogyo Company Ltd. formed Nucor-Yamato Steel Company in 1987 to manufacture medium-section wide flange beams. The Blytheville, Arkansas mill shipped its first beam in September 1988. Later, Nucor-Yamato added a second Blytheville facility to produce a broader range of wide flange beams. In 1999, Nucor started a structural beam mill in Berkeley County, South Carolina. Both mills use a special continuous casting method that produces a beam blank closer in shape to the finished beam than traditional methods. The mills produce wide flange beams, pilings, and heavy structural steel products for fabricators, construction companies, manufacturers, and steel service centers. Total annual capacity: 3.7 million tons.
