2003 Student Steel Bridge Competition

2003 Student Steel Bridge Competition

TRIVIA TIME! Besides unfettered steel bridge enthusiasm, what does this year's Student Steel Bridge Competition (SSBC) have in common with the competition a couple of decades ago?

Answer: This year's SSBC official rules allow up to two students from each team to act as "barges" to facilitate bridge construction from the river. As you can see in this photo of the University of Florida team 21 years ago, a similar rule applied back then, too. In fact, 2003 was the first time the rules allowed for barges--a feature that is especially helpful this year, with one of the widest rivers in SSBC history!

SSBC regional competitions are all wrapped up (see the results at aisc.org/ssbc), and 49 student teams qualified for the national finals May 31 and June 1 at Louisiana Tech University. We're excited to see these teams shine in just a few weeks--if you're as excited as we are, make some time to put together our puzzle of the week!
