HDR Pricing Study

West: Oregon, Texas, Washington

Steel plate girder bridges are competitive with concrete for all spans greater than 100 ft. and are, in fact, the least expensive bridge type for spans greater than 150 ft.

These costs can be reduced even further. There are currently no new or replacement vehicular steel bridges with spans shorter than 100 ft. Rolled steel beam bridges are the least expensive bridge type on a national scale. This direct competition with concrete usually drives prices down.

Steel plate girder bridge costs are still lower than or competitive with concrete I-beam even though they are frequently used for longer span or more complex bridges.

Note the tight distribution of steel plate girder bridge costs. This type of steel bridge generally sees significantly less variation in pricing than concrete I-beam bridges.
