Celebrate SteelDay with the U.S. Structural Steel Industry September 30

(Chicago, IL) - A free webinar featuring a new documentary on one of America’s greatest bridge designers is the highlight of this year’sSteelDay on September 30 (visit www.steelday.org/webinar to see if you qualify for free microwave popcorn delivery to your office!). Now in its eighth successive year, SteelDay is a national day of outreach and celebration hosted by the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC) and its members and partners, and provides an inside look at the work and accomplishments of the U.S. structural steel industry. Events also include jobsite tours throughout the country, a public voting competition for structural steel building projects and a student photo contest.
“We’re excited about SteelDay 2016 because it is a celebration everyone can be involved in,” said John Cross, AISC vice president. “A celebration of U.S. manufacturing, a celebration of the contributions of the structural steel industry to the built environment, and a celebration of American design and construction professionals who build with structural steel.”
AISC’s broadcast of the new documentary, Bridging Urban America, produced by sOlar eye communications, will be shown on demand from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. on SteelDay and is available for continuing education credit. The film tells the intriguing story of Ralph Modjeski, acclaimed designer of many of America’s greatest bridges, and offers not just awe-inspiring views of these magnificent structures but also illustrates Modjeski’s life as an engineer, entrepreneur, artist and innovator. This year’s SteelDay also introduces a People’s Choice competition that allows the public to vote for their favorite steel building project entered in this year’s AISC IDEAS2 Awards program, which is currently accepting entries through August 26 at www.aisc.org/ideas2. Public voting will take place at www.steelday.org/vote only during the week of SteelDay (September 26-30).
In addition, students have the opportunity to showcase their university’s AISC Steel Sculpture in a contest celebrating 30 years since the creation and installation of the original sculpture at the University of Florida. Today, there are more than 170 of these teaching sculptures across the U.S. and around the world. Now through September 16, students are encouraged to enter a creative photo of their school’s sculpture to be featured on AISC’s Facebook page and voted on by fans during the week of SteelDay for a chance to win prizes.
