Ductility is a fundamental property in structural behavior and design. This presentation reviews the what, why and how of ductility, including how it is used implicitly in typical structural applications and explicitly to withstand extreme dynamic overloads such as earthquakes. In addition, the basic principles for achieving ductile behavior in steel structures are discussed and illustrated.
