This session will focus on the foundations of leadership. We will discuss Jim Collins (Good to Great) 5 levels of leadership and look at the impact of Emotional Intelligence on our ability to lead effectively. We will provide an opportunity for the participants to identify how they view leadership and the leader they aspire to be using an interactive exercise. This will be a highly engaging session with the participants being highly involved.

Fabricator Roundtable Discussion

Fabricators rarely get to talk with their peers in a non-competitive setting. This networking session allows fabricators from different regions of the country, assisted by a moderator, to sit down in small groups and discuss issues critical to the operation and functioning of a structural steel fabrication shop. Discussions will range from dealing with escalation clauses to implementing quality systems. Take advantage of this great networking event to learn and explore opportunities with your peers.

5:00 p.m. 5:30 p.m.

Government Affairs Update

In February, AISC filed trade cases against imports of fabricated structural steel from China, Canada, and Mexico. This was in response to a surge of fabricated structural steel imports from these countries, including more than 1 million tons in 2018. In March, the International Trade Commission (ITC) preliminarily determined that imports from these countries are causing injury to domestic fabricators.

The case has now moved to the Commerce Department for the calculation of dumping and subsidy margins, and fabricator participation will be critical this fall if there is any chance of winning this case.

Brian Raff will present on the details of this case, answer questions, and discuss how critical it is for AISC fabricator members to participate.

Leadership Coaching

This session will focus on one of the most critical skills as a leader—coaching. The key to being a great coach is learning how to give feedback so we will introduce a model to help participants learn how to give feedback. We will put this model into practice with hands-on scenarios and each participant will leave with tools to use back on the job
