Committee Application

AISC has several technical committees that develop and maintain their various standards and manuals, as well as other committees focusing on related areas, such as education and research. Interested individuals are invited to review and complete the application linked below. Please click on the appropriate tab below to begin the application. Applications submitted before April 30, 2025 will be considered for the 2026-2027 committee roster cycle.

New Applications

We strongly encourage all who are interested in joining a task committee to begin by attending meetings as a guest before applying. Most AISC Committees are open to the public and anyone interested may attend. Please contact Martin Downs at downs@aisc.org with any questions about attending as a guest or applying to a committee.


AISC Committee Descriptions

Task Committees

General:  These committees fall under the AISC Committee on Specifications. They are the working committees that focus on various subject areas related to building design in the AISC Specification for Structural Steel Buildings (AISC 360) and the AISC Seismic Provisions for Structural Steel Buildings (AISC 341), unless noted otherwise in the following.  The scope of each task committee's work is implied by its name. 

  • Task Committee 2 (TC 2) - Editorial, Economy, Efficiency, & Practical Use: Responsible for maintaining editorial consistency and evaluating existing and new provisions for economy, efficiency, and practical use.

  • Task Committee 3 (TC 3) - Loads, Analysis, & Stability

  • Task Committee 4 (TC 4) - Member Design

  • Task Committee 5 (TC 5) - Composite Design

  • Task Committee 6 (TC 6) - Connection Design

  • Task Committee 7 (TC 7) - Evaluation & Repair: Responsible for evaluation and repair provisions in AISC 360 and development of the Seismic Provisions for Evaluation and Retrofit of Existing Structural Steel Buildings (AISC 342).

  • Task Committee 8 (TC 8) - Design for Fire Conditions: Responsible for the fire appendix in AISC 360.

  • Task Committee 9 (TC 9) - Seismic Systems:  Responsible for the system design provisions in AISC 341.

  • Task Committee 10 (TC 10) - Materials, Fabrication, & Erection

  • Task Committee 11 (TC 11) - Nuclear Facilities Design:  Responsible for development of the AISC Specification for the Design of Safety-Related Nuclear Facilities (AISC N690).

  • Task Committee 12 (TC 12) - Quality Control and Quality Assurance

 

COMMITTEE ON CERTIFICATION STANDARDS

This Committee is responsible for the maintenance and development of certification standards for steel building fabricators, steel bridge and highway component manufacturers, erectors, and a sophisticated painting endorsement for steel buildings, bridges, and bridge and highway metal components.

COMMITTEE ON THE CODE OF STANDARD PRACTICE

This Committee considers matters that relate to the standard trade practices in buying and selling structural steel. These become defined in the Code of Standard Practice for Steel Buildings and Bridges (AISC 303) to govern the fabrication and erection of structural steel, in the absence of specific instructions to the contrary in the contract documents.

COMMITTEE ON MANUALS

This Committee is responsible for the continual development, review, and maintenance of AISC technical guidance related to the design of structural steel, including the Steel Construction Manual and the Seismic Design Manual. 

COMMITTEE ON RESEARCH AND INNOVATION

The goals and objectives of the AISC research efforts are set by the AISC Board of Directors.  The mission of AISC research is to promote, investigate and manage research to bring new technology, innovation and improvements into the structural steel design and construction industry. 

COMMITTEE ON SPECIFICATIONS

This Committee is the consensus body responsible for the approval of the Specification for Structural Steel Buildings (AISC 360), Seismic Provisions for Structural Steel Buildings (AISC 341), Specification for the Design of Safety-Related Nuclear Facilities (AISC N690), and Seismic Provisions for Evaluation and Retrofit of Existing Structural Steel Buildings (AISC 342).

COMMITTEE ON STRUCTURAL STAINLESS STEEL

The AISC Committee on Structural Stainless Steel is the consensus body that develops and approves the Specification for Structural Stainless Steel Buildings (AISC 370) and the Code of Standard Practice for Structural Stainless Steel Buildings (AISC 313).

CONNECTION PREQUALIFICATION REVIEW PANEL

The AISC Connections Prequalification Review Panel (CPRP) is the consensus body that develops and approves Prequalified Connections for Special and Intermediate Steel Moment Frames for Seismic Applications (AISC 358). This standard contains provisions for the design, detailing, fabrication, and quality criteria for prequalified beam-to-column moment connections for use in special moment frames (SMF), intermediate moment frames (IMF), and link-to-column connections in eccentrically braced frames (EBF). 

PARTNERS IN EDUCATION

The purpose of the Partners in Education Committee is to advise AISC on ways we can assist universities in preparing students to become professionals knowledgeable in the use of structural steel.  Toward this end, we develop programs for faculty and students.  The committee consists of members from academia, consulting practices, and the steel industry.

SAFETY COMMITTEE

This committee is part of the NASCC: The Steel Conference planning committee and helps to plan and execute SafetyCon, a conference focused on safety in fabrication shops and job sites. Members of the committee suggest session topics, recommend speakers, and coordinate the sessions. In addition, the committee makes suggestions for needed safety resources, recommends existing programs, and helps to plan additional education programs related to safety.

STUDENT STEEL BRIDGE COMPETITION RULES COMMITTEE

The SSBC Rules Committee writes and interprets the rules for the Student Steel Bridge Competition.  The committee also rules on final appeals from regional competitions and the national finals.

TASK GROUP ON INDUSTRIAL BUILDINGS & NONBUILDING STRUCTURES

The primary goal of this AISC task group is to address design problems and issues in steel industrial buildings and nonbuilding structures that are not normally encountered in other types of structures.

NSBA TECHNICAL COMMITTEE

This committee’s goal is to advance the state-of-the-art in steel bridges by promoting standardization, new technology, improved details and practices, and by facilitating research.  This committee also provides oversight and support for the AASHTO/NSBA Steel Bridge Collaboration.  Additionally, this committee will support and serve as a technical resource for NSBA Regional Staff.


 

AASHTO/NSBA Task Group Descriptions

AASHTO/NSBA TASK GROUPS

The following task groups fall under the AASHTO/NSBA Steel Bridge Collaboration Main Committee. The mission of the Collaboration is to achieve quality and value in steel bridges by standardization of design, fabrication, and erection, and by the sharing of resources. Through the Collaboration, steel bridge professionals work together in a spirit of cooperation and mutual respect to develop details, specifications, and practices, and to exchange knowledge, technology, and expertise.

  • Task Group 1 (TG 1) - Detailing This Task Group is specifically responsible for the creation and maintenance of guidelines and best practices for the creation of clear concise design and fabrication drawings.

  • Task Group 2 (TG 2) - Fabrication and Repair
    This Task Group aims to achieve quality and value in the fabrication of steel bridges through standardization of steel bridge fabrication across the nation. Historically, State Departments of Transportation (DOTs) have written their specifications based on AASHTO standards and their own individual experiences.

  • Task Group 4 (TG 4) - QC/QA
    This Task Group focuses on the requirements for a fabricator's quality control program, with emphasis on the development and implementation of a quality control plan and minimum requirements for an owner's quality assurance program.

  • Task Group 8 (TG 8) - Coatings
    This Task Group primarily focuses on the functions, operations, requirements and activities needed to achieve consistent quality in steel bridge coatings. At the same time the group acknowledges the need for a cooperative approach to quality, where the Owner's and Contractor's representatives work together to meet their responsibilities, resulting in efficient steel bridges coatings that meeting all contractual requirements.

  • Task Group 9 (TG 9) - Bearings
    This Task Group is specifically responsible for the creation and maintenance of guidelines and best practices for steel bridge bearings.

  • Task Group 10 (TG 10) - Erection
    This Task Group develops guidelines that establish and define the basic, minimum requirements for the transportation, handling and erection of steel bridge components to ensure safe and accurate steel erection as well as quality and value in the completed bridge structure.

  • Task Group 11 (TG 11) - Design
    This Task Group is primarily responsible for the development and maintenance of consensus guidelines to assist with the design of steel bridges and their components.

  • Task Group 12 (TG 12) - Design for Constructability and Fabrication
    This Task Group focuses on addressing the questions that have been and are continually asked concerning the constructability of steel bridges according to the latest practice for steel mills, fabrication, detailing, erection, and design.

  • Task Group 13 (TG 13) - Analysis of Steel Bridges
    This Task Group focuses on the development of guidance on the issues related to steel girder bridge analysis and to educate Engineers so that they can better make decisions for their own projects.

  • Task Group 14 (TG 14) - Field Repairs and Retrofits
    This Task Group primarily focuses on providing practical solutions for design and implementation of field repairs and retrofits of existing steel bridges.

  • Task Group 15 (TG 15) - Data Modeling for Interoperability
    This Task Group focuses on facilitating the development of bridge industry consensus standards for data description, modeling, and interoperability for integrated design, construction, and lifecycle management of bridges (i.e., BIM).

  • Task Group 16 (TG 16) - Orthotropic Deck Panels
    This Task Group aims to establish an Orthotropic Steel Deck (OSD) panel design that can be cost effectively produced in the United States for the bridge market.

  • Task Group 17 (TG 17) - Steel Castings
    The mission of this Task Group is to develop and disseminate resources specific to the US steel bridge community to support the increased and effective use of castings in steel bridges. The targeted community includes design engineers, DOT professionals, steel fabricators, steel erectors, inspectors, general contractors, especially on design/build projects, and detailers.

  • Task Group 18 (TG 18) - Duplex Stainless Steel
    This Task Group will include experts from the carbon steel and stainless steel communities and will work together to develop standalone material, design, welding, fabrication, and construction guide specifications for using duplex stainless steel for vehicular plate girder bridges. These guide specifications will be largely based on existing duplex stainless steel design and fabrication specifications (such as AISC 370), but will be revised to provide the same formatting and flow as the standards typically used in the steel bridge community, such as AASHTO LRFD or AASHTO/AWS D1.5.

AASHTO/NSBA STEEL BRIDGE COLLABORATION MAIN COMMITTEE

The Collaboration Main Committee provides oversight and guidance for all of the AASTHO/NSBA Steel Bridge Collaboration Task Groups.
