Gateway Arch Celebrates 50th Anniversary

Photo: Gateway Arch

Today marks the golden anniversary of St. Louis’ Gateway Arch! Completed on October 28, 1965, this gleaming steel icon alongside the Mississippi River commemorates the U.S. spirit of westward expansion from the mid-1800s. Clad in 500 tons of stainless steel and built 630 ft high in the form of an inverted, weighted catenary curve, it is the world's tallest arch, the tallest monument in the Western Hemisphere and Missouri's tallest accessible structure.
