United Steel, Inc. (an AISC member and certified fabricator) based in East Hartford, Conn., has received three honors from industry organizations throughout the New England region. The company was named one of the “Top Workplaces” in the Greater Hartford region, won a merit award from the Massachusetts Chapter of the Associated Builders and Contractors organization, and received a community service award from the Connecticut Construction Industry Association for this year’s SteelDay. Each award was presented to United Steel during the last quarter of 2016.
The “Top Workplaces” award is given out annually by The Hartford Courant based on an independent survey of local employees. This is the third year in a row United Steel received this recognition for mid-sized businesses in the Greater Hartford area. This year, the company also received the 2016 Outstanding Appreciation award based on a nomination by its employees.
The Massachusetts Chapter of the Associated Builders and Contractors recognized United Steel for its problem solving and challenging work on the Worcester Regional Transit Authority’s Maintenance and Operations Facility. As part of the structural steelwork for this new 151,000-sq.-ft building, the company manufactured and installed a 24-ton steel truss that was 17 ft high by 80 ft long. United Steel worked outside the building footprint (an unusual process) to install this large piece, relocating its 250-ton crane (with 200-ft boom) to eight separate locations to complete the job.
The third award came from the Connecticut Construction Industry Association honoring United Steel’s community-based SteelDay 2016 program. United Steel hosted community tours of its 175,000 sq.-ft automated manufacturing facility (including new contamination-free “clean room” for manufacturing metal parts and components that are free of cross-contamination with carbon steel particles), and hosted product demonstrations from leading manufacturers and suppliers throughout the region. The company also brought together industry leaders to discuss the state of the vital steel trade industry.
“This has been a very productive and exciting year for our company and these three awards reflect the hard work and dedication of everyone at United Steel,” said Ken Corneau, president of United Steel. “The construction industry is full of many talented people and companies so we greatly appreciate being recognized among some of the finest.”
