AISC has teamed up with RePicture, a virtual community where students learn about STEM careers and real-world projects while researching structural steel-related engineering, architecture, and construction topics. The program began June 29 and wrapped up August 10, 2020.

Participating students were given the opportunity to show off what they've learned for a chance to win awards across a variety of categories. Check out our winners from the first two weeks of the program below.

Early Skyscrapers Award

Students must complete a project write-up for an early "skyscraper" constructed before 1940.

Winner: QiTong Han (Cooper Union) for Early Skyscraper: The Home Insurance Building

"The Home Insurance Building, located on the northeast corner of LaSalle and Adams Streets of Chicago, was built in 1885 as the first skyscraper in America to have a core of metal embedded in the masonry."

Modular Construction for Affordable Housing Award

Students must complete a write-up for a project that used steel for modular construction.

Winner:
QiTong Han (Cooper Union) for Rockefeller University SNF-DR River Campus

"Construction over FDR Drive was one of the project's major challenges because the roadway needed to remain open with minimum traffic disruption and impact on the city. With the steel framed modular construction, the team was able to meet the owner's need with cost and time savings."
