AISI elects Leon Topalian as new chair

Nucor Corporation President and CEO Leon Topalian is taking on a prestigious new role -- chair of the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI). On May 25, the AISI Board of Directors elected Topalian to serve for a two-year term, replacing outgoing chair John Brett, CEO of ArcelorMittal North America.

In his new role, Topalian aims to unite all sectors of the industry under the common goal of advocating for the use of American steel.

“We need to speak with one voice as an industry if we are to achieve our industry’s key policy objectives, including, among other things, securing significant new federal infrastructure investment that prioritizes the use of clean American-made steel and combatting foreign trade actors who continue to dump their subsidized steel in our market,” Topalian said. “I look forward to working with my AISI colleagues to ensure the American steel industry remains a strong and vibrant part of the American economy.”

In addition to electing Topalian as chair, AISI elected outgoing chair Brett and Chuck Schmitt, president of SSAB Americas, as vice-chairs.
