Maria Lehman Elected ASCE President for 2022-2023

The American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) has elected Maria Lehman, PE president for the 2022-2023 term.

Currently serving as the Society’s national treasurer, Lehman has been actively involved in ASCE leadership roles for nearly 40 years, since she co-founded the Northeast Region Younger Members Council in 1983. Among her many past and present appointments, she was Buffalo Section president in 1990. Lehman has won several awards, including ASCE’s President’s Medal and the New York State Society of Professional Engineers Engineering Manager of the Year.

As president, Lehman will act as the chief representative and spokesperson for ASCE, along with the Society’s executive director. She will also chair the Board of Direction and Executive Committee in addition to promoting ASCE’s principles, policies, and goals to members and potential members.

“It’s an honor to represent ASCE and the civil engineering profession as the Society president, and I look forward to the challenge,” Lehman said in a June 3 press release. “I feel I have an interesting voice to add – to be able to right some of the wrongs in the profession right now and really set us up to be the leaders that we’re meant to be.”

Lehman will be inducted as president-elect at the Annual Business Meeting this October, and her term will last a year, from 2022 to 2023. She will replace 2022 president Dennis D. Truax, PE, Ph.D. The current president of ASCE is Jean-Louis Briaud, PE, Ph.D, who will serve until Truax takes office this October.
