Federal Reserve Building
The seven-story addition atop the Federal Reserve Building in Seattle appears to be floating above the original 1949 structure--an illusion made possible with steel!
To create design separation between the new and building, the project team created a one-story, column-free “hyphen” above the roof of the existing structure.
They used a cantilevered plate girder above the setback that supports the entire weight of the addition’s perimeter columns and employed a full 3D model of the gravity framing to hone their design.
