US 460 Russell Fork Bridge

US 460 Russell Fork Bridge

Most bridge projects have at least one complicated factor--and some, like the Russell Fork River bridge in eastern Kentucky, have multiple constraints to deal with!

The design team behind this new steel bridge worked around an active railway loading site, an abandoned mine, and a habitat for threatened species to complete a crucial link between U.S. 23 in Kentucky and Interstate 81 in Virginia--a route that traverses mountainous terrain in three Appalachian states and slices through hillsides, sometimes high above valley floors.
