CHICAGO - For the past three decades, many young professionals were fortunate to share a truly remarkable experience: When they attended their first AISC committee meetings, a prominent researcher would take them under their wing, introducing them to key contacts, and setting them up with valuable connections that would serve them well for the rest of their careers.

Who was that good Samaritan? Reidar Bjorhovde.

The AISC Education Foundation is proud to honor his inspiring legacy by establishing the Reidar Bjorhovde Outstanding Young Professional Award. It’s designed to do precisely what he used to do at those meetings, but on a larger scale.

Every penny donated to the AISC Education Foundation between now and December 31 will go toward making the Bjorhovde Award a lasting success. In fact--thanks to generous matching support from Nucor and Reidar’s widow, Pat--all contributions to the AISC Education Foundation before the end of the year will be doubled.

The Award will open doors for a particularly promising young professional, just as Reidar would have done. AISC will help them develop a network of connections to kick-start their careers. We’ll set them up with mill and fab shop tours so they can get a deep understanding of what our industry really has to offer. This Award will allow us to provide a travel grant for them to attend NASCC: The Steel Conference to network in person.

In short, we’ll take them under our wing and introduce them to the folks who can help them make their mark.

Reidar was a beloved figure in the industry. After his death in 2021, a number of industry folks reached out to AISC to ask whether there was something we could do to honor his contributions to the industry and to the people who make it great. There could be no more fitting tribute to a man so invested in giving future generations a professional head-start.
