CHICAGO - Are you an up-and-coming architect? Then we want to hear about your creative vision of the future. The fourth annual Forge Prize competition is now accepting entries!

This competition, established by The American Institute of Steel Construction in 2018, recognizes visionary emerging architects for designs that embrace steel as a primary structural component and capitalize on steel’s ability to increase a project’s speed.

“The Forge Prize is a unique opportunity to experiment with a conceptual design without limits in scope or complexity--the sky really is the limit here,” said Houston-based AISC Structural Steel Specialist Alex Morales, Associate AIA, EDAC, LEED Green Assoc. “It provides a structure and a sandbox for emerging architects to play with what’s possible in steel.”

U.S.-based architects who are either currently seeking licensure or have been licensed for fewer than 10 years may enter online at forgeprize.com. 

Three finalists will each win $5,000. They’ll work with a steel fabricator to refine their concept before stepping into the industry spotlight to present their concepts live to the judges--and to the world--on YouTube. 

The winner will take home an additional $10,000 and be invited to present his/her design to the industry at the Architecture in Steel conference, which is incorporated in NASCC: The Steel Conference, in Denver next March.

Entries are due by Oct. 31, 2021. 

About the 2021 competition

Hunter Ruthrauff of T.Y. Lin International Group in San Diego took top honors in the 2021 competition with a stunning 3D-printed steel pedestrian bridge. Ruthrauff worked with Glenn Tabolt of STS Steel, Inc., to refine the design, which takes advantage of 3D-printed steel’s superior tensile strength.
