Through the use of structural steel, Cal Poly student Ron Patanavin reimagined an oil rig as a Chumash cultural center.

When Patanavin was looking for ideas for the AISC/ACSA Steel Design Student Competition, he found inspiration in the form of a decommissioned oil rig off the coast of Santa Barbara. With guidance from his faculty advisor, Thomas Fowler IV, director of the Graduate Architecture Program and Design Collaboratory, he created a design that won first place in the 2022 competition's Open category!
