In addition to 9,316 tons of steel, the neo-Gothic icon features extensive carvings by the American artist Rene Paul Chambellan--among them, images of Robin Hood and a howling dog in honor of the architects. When it opened in 1925, Col. Robert R. McCormick called it "the most beautiful office building in the world."
