Brittle Fracture, The Whole Story: 40+ Years of Near Misses and Lessons Not Learned [E15]

We will examine a history of low-energy, brittle fractures in steel structures, from the Orlando Civic Center to the recent Transbay Transit Center, to illustrate common links, industry impact, and challenges with well-understood but too often overlooked issues. We'll look at fracture science, the current state of industry standards, and proposed recommendations.
