Buckling analysis of castellated steel beams using inverse eigenvalue beam element

A study of castellated beams of hot rolled as well as cold formed steel cross section is undertaken to determine elastic critical moment of the member for different loading and boundary conditions. A beam element is derived using inverse eigenvalue technique (IET) to incorporate effect of castellation in buckling. IET utilizes the dynamic mass matrix concept to delete energies of the holes in the beams, from the total energy of the whole beam. Numerical investigation is done using shell elements of the commercial software ABAQUS to validate the results. It is found that the rather simple derived beam element generates comparable results with the numerical ones.

Learning Objectives:
