Got Stiffness? - An Enjoyable Analytical Investigation of Lateral Force Resisting Base Plates
All steel structures begin with a base plate anchor rods. The base plate is an essential part of the structure and is crucial to its performance during a seismic or wind event. However, little research has been performed on them, and therefore little is known about the correct modeling and performance of base plates and anchor rods. This presentation takes some of the mystery out of the design of these deceptively simple, often overlooked, frequently marginalized and yet crucial members in order to minimize the chance of a change order or catastrophe.
